“Kerana Sayang, Kita Bergerak Bersama” – The Down Syndrome Society of Johor

Translation: For love, we move together.

In collaboration with the Down Syndrome Society of Johor (PSDNJ), Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB), and PUSPANITA Negeri Johor, MMI X-traordinary aims to raise awareness and funds for people with Down Syndrome. One of the key objectives of this project is to advocate for their rights and inclusion, through our World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) 2019 Campaign.

MMI X-traordinary comprised of 3 main components, namely the X-traordinary Run (our first ever mega run), the WDSD T-Shirt Fundraising Initiative, and the #LeaveNoOneBehind Awareness Campaign. Through MMI X-traordinary, we have successfully raised RM130,000 for these children with special needs. All the funds raised were channelled to the Down Syndrome Society of Johor (PSDNJ), Cerebral Palsy Johor, and the Princess Elizabeth School for the Blind.

Our World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) T-Shirt Fundraising Initiative was launched early in February 2019 to spread a positive message on “Love Doesn’t Count Chromosomes”. Through this initiative, we partnered with 5 medical student societies across Malaysia to further improve awareness amongst medical students on Down Syndrome

On the morning of 6th April 2019, the Johor Bahru city centre woke up to a crowd of over 2,500 participants from all walks of life gathering outside the Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru headquarters for the X-traordinary Run. During the event, we hosted a number of VIPs, including the Datuk Bandar (Johor Bahru City Mayor), YB Dato’ Haji Amran bin A. Rahim, patron of PUSPANITA Johor, YAB Datin Nora bt Mohn Sam, in addition to a number of Johor State Assemblymen (ADUNs), YB Tan Hong Pin (ADUN Skudai), YB Mohd. Izhar Ahmad (ADUN Larkin), Dato’ Che Zakaria (ADUN Permas), YB Gopalakrishnan Subramaniam (ADUN Tiram) and YB Andrew Chen Kah Eng (ADUN Stulang).

It was a touching sight to witness the Johor community coming together to support our cause. From seeing the sea of people clad in our WDSD T-shirt to the message #LeaveNoOneBehind being conveyed through our symbolic flag-off which had our participants joining the run together with children with Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy, the supportive and inclusive gestures from the public throughout the event were heart-warming indeed.

The X-traordinary Run would not have been possible without the support from our partners, our generous sponsors, as well as the medical school volunteers from Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia and Monash University. A huge thank you to all the contributions made towards our cause. With this, we are immensely proud that MMI X-traordinary, the very first MMI Outreach project in Malaysia’s southern region, was a huge success under the leadership of Edward Goh, the Organizing Chairperson of MMI X-traordinary, alongside his X-traordinary team. MMI X-traordinary looks forward to extending its community outreach to serve more children with special needs in the near future.

Once again, we would like to express our utmost gratitude to everyone for the support shown throughout the course of MMI X-traordinary. Thank you.
