INTRODUCTION

MMI Diversity and Equity Initiative 2021/22 is a 5-week campaign that is dedicated to increasing the awareness of the diverse patient community of various backgrounds and to promote equity in the medical landscape and beyond.

Despite the equal provision of access to healthcare, equitable access to healthcare is yet to be achieved for Women’s Health, the Deaf community, Persons with Disabilities, Refugees, Indigenous people and the LGBTQIA+ community. They are faced with cultural, language and financial barriers that disproportionately affect their access to healthcare.

Thus, it is crucial to address these barriers to improve the health outcomes and quality of life of these communition.

Communication between the patient and the doctor is fundamental to good medical practice. Sign language helps to bridge the gap, enhancing effective communication.

Sign language is beautiful, elegant and expressive. No matter if you are deaf or hard of hearing, learning sign language makes you a better communicator among others.

Other than that, braille is another familiar system to many people, that helps blind people to be more independent. The uses of braille extend way beyond just reading books, from dialing a phone number to checking a bank statement.
