Getting Into Medical School (GIMS)

Getting Into Medical School (GIMS)

Getting Into Medical School (GIMS) is Malaysian Medics International Young Medics’ (MMIYM) annual event. The purpose of GIMS is to introduce pre-university students to the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) setting and to equip them with the proper skills to ensure that they can ace their medical school interviews. As the name implies, GIMS aims to clear the doubts of pre-university students as well as to prepare them to face and hopefully ace their medical school interview through a series of activities. Apart from that, pre-university students also get to connect with medical students and potential batchmates during the networking session. Through GIMS, participants will be exposed to the medical universities interview system and get to try it with the guidance of distributed mentors in order to gain more confidence for the actual medical interview.

How is GIMS conducted?

Getting Into MedicalSchool (GIMS) is held annually as the second event of MMIYM Branch Council. The event is usually held in June every year and was held virtually using Zoom Meetings as the platform for yet another year.

Throughout the event day, there were many activities planned for the participants. These activities aim to allow participants to learn interview techniques and formats taught by medical students. In addition to that, participants will also be able to try out the mock Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI). Some examples of the activities held in previous events include:

  1. Keynote speech

    • Participants learn how to prepare interviews from the perspective of examiners.

    • Participants also learn about the medical interview process from start to finish.

  2. Medical Students Forum

    • Participants learn how to prepare interviews from the perspective of applicants.

  3. Mentor-Mentee Programme

    • Participants are provided with a mentor group and guided by the mentors throughout the interview phase.

  4. Mock Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)

    • Medical students who act as the interviewer will interview the participants.

    • Participants are given a chance to experience the whole MMI process and get their personal feedback from the interviewers.

  5. Pre-Meds Collab

    • Participants are added into a big group which consists of applicants from other colleges and medical students in the respective universities.

Conclusion

Through Getting Into Medical School (GIMS), we at MMIYM hope that participants will gain a deeper insight into the medical interview system. Participants could utilise this opportunity to get to know more about the ways to ace their medical interviews. In addition, we also hope that the participants seize this opportunity to connect and expand their network between medical and pre-med students. For those who are still not sure about the medical interviews system, we believe that this platform will be instrumental in their preparation process. Participants will be able to learn in a fun and engaging way while also expanding their social circle and networking. Lastly, we hope that the participants will take away valuable lessons after the event and subsequently, be competent in getting into medical school.
