A Call for Resolution on Issues Faced by Contract Medical Officers
We refer to the above matter. This is a press statement released by the Malaysian Medics International to advocate for better welfare and fairer contracts for our junior doctors in Malaysia following the conclusion of the Malaysian Medical Summit 2020. This press statement is also released in response to the Memorandum tabled during the MMI General Assembly 2020 held on 9th of August 2020 as part of the Malaysian Medical Summit.
“Are house officers to be blamed for not performing up to standards, or are the doctors not putting enough attention on their role as mentors?”
I am sure everyone had a day when we dreaded going to our clinical attachments. Was it the fact that you felt useless in the wards, or were the doctors not treating you well? There are plenty of reasons…

I always felt the passivity and the lack of initiative in students; always heard about complaints from specialists about their house officers, about their incompetence; the bullying and the toxic work culture; the lack of kindness and respect for vulnerable junior healthcare workers…
“Remember, we are not experts, make as many mistakes as we can and while we can.”
In this decade when the career pathways for doctors are no longer secured, do we, as medical students, compete for resources and try to interfere with each other's progress due to fear…
“Embracing these changes in the next decade will shape how we work and treat patients in the future.”
To me as a medical student, it is all about being adaptable to the current trends in healthcare, and not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. I highly appreciate and admire the technological advancements…
“Now is the time to move forward.”
At face value, “Shaping the Decade” could literally mean what it says on the tin - how we as members of the medical fraternity, decide to shape the direction and progress within the healthcare setting. However, I believe that it is so much more than that…
“Have you ever wondered, are you competent for the future medical career?”
I do not believe in the best, I only believe in better. ‘Shaping Our Decade’, to me, means we must all find the courage, take the first step and make the change - bringing our healthcare system to a whole new altitude. Bringing the future we want, the vision in our mind and the aspiration in our soul into reality - only we can make this happen. If not us, then who? If not now, then when?…
“We, the doctors of tomorrow must take the first step — for a better tomorrow.”
“Shaping Our Next Decade”. What comes into the minds of us prospective doctors when we see this phrase? It means to reflect back on all the medical challenges that have surfaced in the past, the policy changes to all HOs and MOs, effects of political transformation on our healthcare system and the striving to improve our Malaysian healthcare system to become one of the world’s best health systems…
